Mompreneur Spotlight – Milky Mama

Milky Mama is a company that specializes in all natural lactation treats for nursing mothers. Her product line includes cookies, brownies, smoothies, teas, lemonades and much more. Additionally, Milky Mama offers lactation support and a sense of community through Facebook.

Krystal Duhaney, the owner of Milky Mama prides herself on being able “to give breastfeeding support.” She even has celebrities such as Chrissy Teigan and reality TV Star Coco Austin, wife of rapper Ice-T, enjoying her delectable treats. She used her  struggle, not only as a platform to help other mothers in need but to provide a safe haven for the sharing of knowledge and women empowerment.

Modish Mommies: Tell us about yourself and Milky Mama?

Krystal Duhaney: I am a Registered Nurse, Certified Lactation Counselor, and mother of two beautiful children. I have a passion for breastfeeding and supporting moms on their breastfeeding journeys. Milky Mama is a Lactation Treat and breastfeeding support company whose mission is to help moms breastfeed longer.

MM: What was the inspiration behind Milky Mama?

KD: Inspiration for Milky Mama came from my breastfeeding experience with my first child. I didn’t have much support from my community and didn’t know who to turn to for advice. When I became pregnant with my second child, I knew that I wanted a different experience. I also realized that so many mothers experienced the same lack of support that I did and I definitely wanted to change that. So, Milky Mama was born! Not only do we make delicious lactation treats, but we also provide a wonderful support system for breastfeeding moms.

MM: What distinguishes your treats from the other lactation treats on the market?

KD: Lots!! Not only are our treats absolutely DELICIOUS, they don’t contain any fenugreek (which has been linked to gas/colic in infants and other side effects), they really work, and they are formulated by a Registered Nurse, Certified Lactation Counselor, and breastfeeding mommy (all one person). Additionally, we offer the largest variety of lactation products to appeal to almost everyone’s tastes and preferences 🙂

MM:  As a momtrepreneur, what is your best survival tip when you are trying to juggle both your business AND your kids?

KD: My best survival tip is to set a time when you are done working. It’s so easy to get caught up with emails and phone calls, that you miss reading a story, playing with your kids, or spending time with your husband. Don’t forget to set aside time to spend with your family.

MM: Did you have a business plan when you started your company or was it learn as you go?

KD: No. My company’s growth completely took me by surprise. Once we reached a certain point, I realized we were actually a “Company” lol, I knew then that I needed to prepare myself to continue to grow. That’s when I developed a business plan, marketing strategies, etc. I am still learning and will continue to do so forever.

MM: How did you build up your clientele? How do you market yourself now?

KD: I built my clientele via word of mouth and social media. I also did lots of networking and market research. I studied what my market needed and found solutions to problems that they had.

MM: In your opinion, what do you think most of your customers appreciate about you and your business?

KD: I think most customers appreciate the amazing knowledge and support they get, the customer service, the quality of our products, and the overall “Milky Mama Experience”. I take the time to advise as many mommies as I can regarding their breastfeeding troubles via email, phone, and Facebook Live Chats.

MM: How long did it take for you to start seeing a profit? We don’t need exact time but was it immediate? What advice do you have for mothers who may not see profit immediately?

KD: I started seeing profits almost immediately. Over time, the profit continued to grow. For those momtrepreneurs who don’t see profits right away, don’t give up. Ask your customers for feedback and listen to it. Give your customers an experience they can’t get anywhere else and keep them coming back for more.

MM: What did you learn from your biggest failure as a momtrepreneur?

KD: I learned to plan ahead and always look towards the future. I recently encountered a massive amount of orders that completely overwhelmed us. This taught me a valuable lesson: Never underestimate yourself, your product, your brand, or your customers.
